Bedside Manner

Believe it or not, it was my mother that told me this back when I was in medical school. She told me that the best thing I could do is to express how much I care for my patients and how much they matter to me. She also said to me that many of them will feel better just by showing that you care. Those words have stuck with me since then. The truth is she was right. There have been studies done on this, and they all point to this being true. According to a recent study published in the journal PLOS One, that simple things like having empathy and making eye contact have an impact on care. I know many of my colleagues there is very little time in their tight schedules to do some of these things. For many of them it is more how am I going to manage my overbooked patient load? I don’t blame any of my colleagues for this, I know it’s the actual health system that does not allow them the actual time to treat patients properly. That is also why I decided to open up my integrative medicine practice. At my practice, I am not constrained by time, and I can understand what is bothering my patients and how I can better assist them. My goal all along has been to make time for patients and help overcome whatever issues they might have. Healing isn’t just about what drugs you should be taking, it’s also having the right mindset for allowing healing to occur.
