What is Leaky Gut Syndrome?

Usually when something leaks it is a bad thing! When it comes to your digestive system, it’s no different. With what is known as a Leaky Gut, the integrity of the intestinal lining is compromised and is no longer as discerning as it should be between what is absorbed into your blood stream and what is kept out.

You could think of your digestive system as a filter…it’s suppose to let some things through (the nutrients your body needs) and keep other things out. So when you eat with a leaky gut, some undigested food particles can “leak” into the blood stream that should not be there.  Your body recognizes this and mounts an immune response which can cause inflammation and tissue damage.

You could have a piece of banana that gets into your blood and your immune system thinks this is a foreign invader. It attacks it and you experience an allergic reaction. What is also disconcerting is the fact that yeast and bacteria can also “leak” into the blood stream and cause havoc on your health.

Leaky Gut Syndrome is very active in those people that suffer with autoimmune diseases such as Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, arthritis, multiple sclerosis, Chron’s disease, and others.

Here are some signs you may have a Leaky Gut:

  • Digestive issues like bloating, gas, diarrhea or irritable bowel syndrome
  • Candida yeast overgrowth
  • Food allergies or intolerances
  • Chronic fatigue or fibromyalgia
  • Seasonal allergies or asthma
  • Hormonal imbalances
  • Diagnosis of an autoimmune disease
  • Emotional/mental issues such as depression, anxiety, ADD, or ADHD
  • Skin problems like acne, rosacea, or eczema

Leaky Gut is a very serious condition and should be corrected as soon as possible. If you discovered a pipe that was leaking in your house, would you just ignore it?  Of course not. You would correct it before it caused more damage. Contact Dr. Sayed Shah today to schedule an invaluable consultation to discuss a plan specific for you.
