Healthy Holiday Snacks

Processed foods are foods that have been altered from their original state. This does not mean that all processed foods are bad. Nuts, fruits and vegetables that are cut, seasoned and packaged for convenience are not necessarily dangerous for your health. Nevertheless, I believe that food in its most natural state is best, not only for digestion and proper cell function, but also for energy to thrive.

My goal in feeding my family is to eat foods that are minimally processed when possible. I am also a working mom of two little girls, so I understand the stress and hustle of life. There are times when packaged foods are a must! But which packaged foods can we eat that aren’t chemically processed and likely to cause cancer or other diseases?

This holiday my family and I will be traveling to Colorado to visit my brother and his family! Our plan is to not spend money on food until we arrive and to bring a big cooler with everything we need. I will be bringing a variety of fruit, vegetables with hummus, peanut butter and jelly on gluten free bread, and baking healthy banana bread before we leave. https://teattotable.net/banana-bread-without-the-dread/  I have also come up with a list of my favorite travel snacks, which I purchased from Natural Grocers.

  1. Larabar Peanut Butter Cookie bars and Double Chocolate Brownie bites.

The bars contain just three ingredients: dates, peanuts and seasalt. The brownie bites contain: dates, almonds, chocolate chips, cocoa powder, coconut flour and sea salt. Both items are dairy- and gluten-free and fabulous.

  1. Bubba Fine Foods Snack Mix.

Today I picked up Smokey Chipotle BBQ. The BBQ package contains: Bananas, Coconut oil, cashews, pecans, organic apple cider vinegar, honey, alderwood smoked sea salt, smoked paprika, mustard, chipotle, tomato powder, chili, turmeric, onion and garlic. These do not taste like bananas. Notice these are ingredients you can recognize, pronounce and are likely to even have in your home.

  1. Boulder Potato Chips, Avocado Oil

These are what I like to call, “Guilt Free Potato Chips!” The ingredients include: Potatoes, avocado oil and sea salt. The only thing that could make these better, is if they were organic, but they are Non-GMO. They are very crunchy and don’t break easily, so they are great for dipping.

  1. Hemp Heart Bites by Manitoba Harvest

I chose the chocolate flavored variety of these crunchy hemp snacks. The ingredients are: hemp hearts, organic evaporated cane sugar, organic brown rice syrup, organic cocoa, sea salt, organic cocoa with other natural flavors. These are nice and crunchy with a candy texture and little hemp flavor.

  1. Organic Mighty Meat Stick

My husband and I have always bought beef jerky for our long road trips. Not sure if that’s a weird tradition or not, but now I’ve found a brand that we can enjoy without the carcinogens. The original flavored ingredients are: organic grass-fed beef, organic honey, sea salt, organic spices, organic garlic powder, cultured celery powder, lactic acid starter culture. I prefer the jalapeno flavored, but among kids, the original is preferred.

  1. Chocolate Sundrops

What kid doesn’t like M&Ms? Mine do, even though they only get them on Halloween or at Grandma’s. Natural Grocers carries Chocolate Sundrops, which look like M&M’s but don’t contain the artificial colors! Yay! Even though these aren’t the healthiest choice, they are definitely a good substitution for the more commonly known items. These do contain dairy, but will be a delicious little treat on our trip!

  1. Organic Chocolove

I bought the 73% dark chocolate. If your family prefers milk chocolate, start with a lower percentage of cocoa content and gradually increase. Typically, the higher the number, the healthier the chocolate. The ingredients are: fair trade certified organic cocoa liquor, fair trade certified organic cane sugar, fair trade certified organic cocoa butter, and soy lecithin. I could eat the whole thing in one sitting, but I promise I won’t!

  1. SO Delicious Coconut Milk Yogurt

Chronic inflammation is what leads to disease. According to Dr. Josh Axe, one cause of inflammation is pasteurized dairy. https://draxe.com/inflammation-at-the-root-of-most-diseases/

Should we be giving this to our families on a daily basis? What do you think? SO Delicious brand has the best coconut milk yogurt, ice cream, cool whip and probably more products than I even know. This yogurt has more sugar (15g) than I like to give my girls, but it’s half the amount flavored dairy yogurts contain. And besides, we are on vacation!

When we transitioned from the Standard American Diet and resistance occurred, I found myself saying, “Well then, you aren’t that hungry.” These snacks are not loaded with too much sugar or artificial ingredients. If your family is used to chemically processed food, it might take some time for taste buds to adjust. Transition kids slowly and understand that removing these ingredients from one’s diet takes time.
