Sick

[dropcap]L[/dropcap]et me relate this back to some of the things I have been dealing with over the past few years. If you have been actively reading my blog posts then you will know that my wife and I had to deal with my son’s autism. Events like these can change the whole dynamic of a family. These life changing pressures on a family will either bring them together or tear them apart.

How does one deal with pressures from daily life? What if one of your loved ones God forbid catches a disease that will alter your home situation? Even having an unexpected pregnancy can redefine a family dynamic. We also cannot discount how much of an emotional toll all of this takes on a family. Things can always happen unexpectedly, the key is coming up with a plan to tackle the particular dilemma at hand.

When it was confirmed that my son did indeed have autism, I had a lot of trouble accepting it. This denial on my side put a strain on our marriage at the time. It took me few months to finally accept my son’s condition. I am pretty sure that if I had continued to deal with my son’s condition by ignoring it, it would have put our marriage in jeopardy.

If you are dealing with this sort of a situation at home where a particular family member’s health is affecting the whole family, then I would suggest having a family meeting and discussing the situation. It’s important for everyone to be open and honest with their feelings. How will things be managed with this family crisis? What sacrifices will have to be made? How can the family as a unit be supportive?

The reality is that certain members of the family may not want to cooperate at first because it might take them a while to accept the situation as reality and in this case I would try and be patient with this person. People are sometimes very resistant to change. Always remember that moments like this are opportunities that can indeed bring a family closer together.
