Answers (No peaking until you have decided on an answer!)

  1. It is located in the upper left part of the belly or abdomen area. The abdomen contains the stomach, liver, spleen, pancreas, intestines, and kidneys.
  2. It serves as a first line of defense for your immune system. The stomach contains hydrochloric acid, which helps to kill off bacteria and viruses that may enter with the food you eat.
  3. The hydrochloric acid could digest your stomach and other organs but the mucous protects the stomach from that happening. It is replaced every 14 days.
  4. Only the first part of digestion happens in the stomach, most of it happens in the small intestines.
  5. They have one stomach with multiple compartments. Some animals have no stomach at all!
  6. The gall bladder stores the bile used to break down dietary fat. That is why those that have had this organ removed have a more difficult time with fatty foods.
  7. It is a very popular myth that thin people have smaller stomachs than big people, but it isn’t true. The stomach is really the same size in everyone, unless you have surgery that changes the size of your stomach. What changes is the food ‘thermostat’ – the point where your stomach tells your brain that it is full.
  8. Stomach rumblings (borborygmi) are caused by wave-like muscular contractions at the walls of the stomach and small intestine. These are normal digestion movements, however the process is louder and more noticeable when the stomach is empty as the sound is not muffled. When you’re full, the sound is less noticeable, if noticed at all.
  9. It pays to eat a healthy diet!
  10. 2700 sq ft (about the size of a tennis court). That’s because the small intestine has three features that increase its surface area. The walls of the intestine have folds, and also contain structures called villi, which are fingerlike projections of absorptive tissue. What’s more, the villi are covered with microscopic projections called microvilli. All of these features help the small intestine to better absorb food.
